Composition/Ingredients Information

A naturally occurring triglyceride vegetable oil and is the highest grade of oil obtained from the castor oil bean.

Hazard Identification

 

No critical hazards which warrant special labelling as this oils is safe.  Pressure injection: will cause severe internal damage if not properly treated.

 

First Aid Measures

Inhalation: n/a

Eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Contact a doctor if pain, blinking, tears or redness persists.

Skin Contact: Wash thoroughly with mild soap and water.  Prolonged exposure may lead to reddening on sensitive skin.

Ingestion: No problems if ingested.  Will have purgative effects.

 

Fire-Fighting Measures

Flammable: Not flammable.

Flash Point: > 300ºC.

General: if involved in fire conditions will burn to give a dense acrid smoke, especially if absorbed onto burning wood etc.

Extinguishing media: carbon dioxide.  Dry chemical.  Foam.  Water spray – DO NOT use direct water spray.

Combustion products: carbon oxides or carbon and trace oxides of sulphur.

 

Accidental Release Measures

Personal precautions: Equip clean up crew with proper protection.

Environment precautions: Notify authorities if liquid enters public waters.

Cleaning up methods for spillages: Remove all potential ignition sources. Contain spilled material. Cover with an inert or non-combustible inorganic absorbent material, sweep up and remove to an approved disposal container. Observe state, federal and local disposal regulations.

 

Handling and Storage

Precautions in handling: Apply good manufacturing practice and industrial hygiene practices, ensuring proper ventilation. Observe good personal hygiene, and do not eat, drink or smoke whilst handling.

Storage conditions: Store in tightly closed original container, in a cool, dry and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from light. Keep air contact to a minimum.

Eye contact: wear goggles if handling hot oil.

Stability/Reactivity

Stable: Contamination with alkalis will for soaps and hot conc acids will char the oil.

 

Toxicological Information

General: Castor Oil BP is a vegetable oil and can be thought of as something similar to “cooking oil”.

Oral: may be taken internally.

Skin contact: very little effect.

Inhalation: Not application under normal use.

Eye contact: a bland oil, although any eye contact should be dealt with immediately.

 

Ecological Information

No long term damage to the environment is envisaged.  If the oil enters streams and rivers in large quantities it will cut off the oxygen supply to aquatic life.

Completely biodegradable.

 

Disposal Considerations

 

Avoid disposing into drainage systems and into the environment.
