Heptanol (Heptyl Alcohol)
Production:
Hydrogenation of heptaldehyde with nickel catalysts will yield heptyl alcohol. The optimum conditions found for quantitative conversion of heptaldehyde to heptyl alcohol are temperature – 100°C, nickel catalyst concentration – 2% based on heptaldehyde (w/w), hydrogen pressure -145 psig and reaction time of about 1 hour.
Applications:
Used as chemical intermediates for:
- Perfumes and flavours (with fruit taste)
- Polymer plasticizer
Used in toilet preparations and detergents.
